UNESCO Young Digital Creators International Petition

Those of you who work with UNESCO might have received the below letter including the petition for the Young Digital Creators Programme I want to share and disseminate.

“Dear YDC Colleagues:
You are receiving this letter because you have participated in the “Young Digital Creators programme” organized by DigiArts UNESCO from 2003 to 2007 (The Sound of our Water / Scenes and Sounds of My City / Youth Creating and Communicating on HIV and AIDS / History and culture of peace in Africa).

Unfortunately, we have received the terrible news that the Young Digital Creators Programme is going to be extinguished, and to express our collective insatisfaction with this situation we propose the signature of an online petition claiming that UNESCO reconsiders its decision.
Please sign the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/ydc/petition.html until June 14th. The petition is available in French, English and Spanish, and can be better visualized using freeware software like Mozilla. We are working with the goal of collecting at least 1000 signatures until then!!! Also, please do be so kind as to ask your students, teachers, friends to take part in this effort to empower our YDC community and state our wish to continue participating in the programme and give other groups the opportunity to take part in it in the future.
Let’s all work together towards a collective action aiming to preserve such an important programme to our communities!

The art of online dating

Reflecting about the new forms of meeting and dating people via the Net through data bases as well as in 3D-Community worlds such as SL, through interactive avatars, it is obvious that the art of online dating establishes new forms of communication and culture. Mediamatic introduced online dating as an art project and launched Beta: on line Dating at Mediamatic. It can be seen in the wider context of the exhibition entitled Gastarbeider Dating curated by Irina Birger and Katja Sokolova. Check it out here.

practice based PhD

“To Phd or not to Phd ? : How to improve research based art practice” was initiated by the Leonardo Education Forum.
In Germany, the practice based PhD is rather not an issue discussed yet. This might be to do with the high status of the traditional PhD, the Dr. phil. in Germany, as discussed on the re:place meeting “At the crossroads of Media Art, Technology and Education supported by LEF. However, here is the information I want to share with you:

“Respondents will include: Ken Friedman, Kristina Niedderer, Deirdre Barron, John Zimmerman, Basak Senova. All interested persons are invited to participate.

Like scientists, artists are engaged in research activities. However research is carried out in different ways when comparing artists to scientists. During the last 20 years, a number of academic institutions have created PhDs in Art as well as a Practice Based Research Degrees. For a thorough report on this question, please refer to the one written by Professor Stuart Lain, University of Brighton (http://www.it.bton.ac.uk/research/euindia/knowledgebase/
brightonpg/laing.htm).

We would like to invite Yasminers to discuss the broader question of how research education in art should be designed today. Respodents will include:

Dr.Ken Friedman, PhD in Design Norwegian School of Management

Dr. Kristina Niedderer. Silversmith and designer as well as an expert on the relation between arts practice and research training. Her current research focuses on experiential knowledge.

Dr. Deirdre Barron from Swinburne University research coordinator at Swinburne University Faculty of Design. She is currently writing a book on doctoral education in design, and together with her research group, she is doing a massive review of the literature to date.

Inspiring New York

At least my body seems to be back from inspiring NY â€“ still full of it. (I attended the Common Ground Arts conference held in NYUâ€™s Tisch School of Art last week end, see previous post).

Apart from linking up with inspiring colleagues and friends, there was a reception at Art in general where they also have a school program bringing together artists and education. Art in General works with two schools in Lower Manhattan, MS 131 Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School and HS 615 Chelsea High School:

â€œOur goal is to encourage collaboration between teachers and teaching artists through art projects that highlight and enrich existing curriculum. Our program exposes students to unconventional art practices and provides both the materials and guidance to make their own original artwork and the unique opportunity to show this artwork at Art in General.
Through collaborative lesson plan building, teaching artists work with classroom teachers, one day per week, for a period of twenty weeks. Together teaching artists and classroom teachers create lesson plans that enrich classroom curriculum and integrate the concepts and techniques of exhibiting artists at Art in General. Class fieldtrips to Art in General introduce the students to New Commissions artists. The program culminates in a final project designed by the student artistsâ€ (link: http://www.artingeneral.org/ education)

Very impressive â€“ the work and the initiatives of the education department of The American Museum of Natural History
where my colleague and friend Roberta Altman works in Education projects at the intersection of art and science and place based learning.
(The current exhibition is entitled â€œWhat makes us human?â€

I also attended a teacher training there of the education department. She introduced how to use the museum as an environment for learning. I was quite impressed not only about the size and the figures (about 35,000 visitors on a weekend, 600 pupils a day). It is such a rich resource for interdisciplinary learning. In NY, science is taught as a subject at elementary school level.

Robertaâ€™s work links museum to education projects with underserved populations of elementary school students from low-income neighbourhoods in the South Bronx, N.Y. :

â€œThey participate in an ongoing interdisciplinary program with The American Museum of Natural History involving art and science in community and place-based learning. A program designed to link classroom, neighbourhood, and museum in a continual cycle of inquiry and learning engages children and teachers in expeditionary learning adventures culminating in artistically expressive exhibitions using the museumâ€™s model of integrating art and science as communication. While visiting the museum, children are exposed to the artwork, practices, and techniques of museum-based artists, getting ideas and experiences in the arts that can then be implemented back in their own schools.” (See also here).

Information for the Arts in Society Conference New York

Here is some information for those who like to hook up on the Art in Society Symposium in NY.

The Arts conference will take place over 23-25 February at New York Universityâ€™s Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway, (Corner Waverly Place) New York, NY 10003 . (See here for theprogramme. )

Ninaâ€™s session on â€œnew media art education initiativesâ€ will be on Friday, 4.10 pm. Nina Czegledy, Lynn Hughes, Trebor Scholz will be presenting. I will join as a discussant. (We meet 2.45 at Dean & Delucca at University at 11th St.)

Cristina Biazusâ€™ session entitled â€œDigital Environments and Creative Processes: The Production of Meaningâ€ will be on Friday at 5 p.m.

Afterwards we’ll meet in the NYUniversity neighborhood for early dinner and preparation of the Saturday morning session.
Lori kindly attached her recs for restaurants we want to share with anyone who is lost.

Our session (panel 2) on â€œinterdisciplinary and cross-cultural art education processes with digital mediaâ€ with Roberta Altman and Lori A. Kent will take place early morning on Saturday, 25, at 9.30am.

At 10.45 I will be presenting software to be explored as well as the UNESCO Young Digital Creators Educatorâ€™s Kit on behalf of Doyun Lee, UNESCO Digi Arts, in the conference foyer.

By the way, The New York Armory Show takes place during the conference, over Feb 23 to 26, (at Pier 94 in NYC) it â€œis a good way to inventory the art market on an (almost) international scale. 148 vendors present an updated version of the earlier infamous “Armory Show” that introduced Modernism to America. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 regular admission. At 55th street, walk west to the waterâ€ (see the post on Currents.)

FREE GOPHERS v1.0 is a new game for mobiles.

“Dear All,

We have begun a public roll-out of our new experimental game ‘Gophers’.
We’re running this trial on an ongoing basis, so it does not matter when
players start (or stop) playing the game.

Our game investigates:
“Social Gaming” and
“Location Based Play” using
“User Generated Content”.

At this stage, we’re just looking to get as many people playing as
possible, so we would be grateful if you would pass this note on to anyone who you
think might be interested.

The game can be played by anyone *over 18* with a Nokia camera phone,
running the Series 60 2nd Edition platform. Players must be at least 18
because the game features user-generated content that has the potential to be
inappropriate for anyone younger. Along with the standard disclaimers,
players should also be aware that the game collects location data regarding
their movements, and that data transmission will be charged at their service providers
usual rate.

In order to play the game, players need to install some software on
their phone. This can be done by pointing their phones web browser at…
