“Enter to play the C5 Quest for Success during the ZeroOne San Jose/ISEA 2006 Symposium August 9-12, 2006
http://www.c5corp.com
The C5 Quest for Success is an invited project for ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge. The ZeroOne San Jose Festival will transform San Jose into the North American epicenter of art and digital culture from August 7th to the 13th, showcasing the world’s most innovative contemporary artists. http://01sj.org
Quest for Success is curatorial selection as urban game, testing competitors’ analysis, management, and cooperative decision making skills – traits needed for success in Silicon Valley. The grand prize is a six to twelve week residency at the Montalvo Arts Center co-sponsored with C5 and a Silicon Valley corporate partner – a great opportunity for the right player with the right project pitch. Contestants navigate the streets of San Jose exploring GPS controlled narratives in an attempt to locate the C5 Corporate Limo. Once there, you just might have the opportunity to pitch your proposal to a panel of distinguished experts. A single winner from each evening’s competition then advances to the final round on Saturday, August 12th. Three finalists representing TALK, DEMO, PERFORM ‘present’ their pitch live on-stage to an audience of thousands during the ZeroOne San Jose culminating celebration.
Does the smell of gasoline and oil perk you up like caffeine? Do lat and long coordinates make your heart sing? Then apply for a chance to win the Montalvo Arts Center C5 artist residency. Six to twelve weeks in picturesque Saratoga, California, working on the project of your dreams with the assistance of one of Silicon Valley’s corporate powerhouses. Does mapping make you giddy? Does your imagination swell listening to stories about entrepreneurial masterminds and nefarious misdeeds? The C5 Quest for Success is your opportunity to be the passionate competitor you know you are.
Apply to participate: http://www.c5corp.com/projects/quest/. You might be the next big thing coming out of Silicon Valley!

After LEGO introduced the new Mindstorms Community MXT http://msdn.microsoft.com/robotics/ , Microsoft is launching Robotic Studio. Will check for education and academic purposes.
I like the construction kid by Amanda Parkes and Hayes Raffle which allows for recording modelled behaviour. See here the article Régine posted on
http://web.media.mit.edu/%7Eamanda/topobo/topoboVideo-medium.html
We used the LEGO Mindstorms RXC micro computer and the so called invention set, based on Robolab with 6th graders of the secondary school at the UNESCO-Project School in Flensburg to develop an interactive environment for play. They integrated them into their self made objects to attach behavior to them. They loved to develop prototypes of different materials, like their invention of the so called mussel-car-bots hiding the RCX computer inside of it, to make the sensor-based technology more invisible and to allow for a variety of appearances.

The National Art Education Association (NAEA) is holding its Annual Convention in New York City in 2007 – great.
“The NAEA Annual Convention
The NAEA annual convention is to provide substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events, and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools. As such, it is the world’s largest art education convention.
The 5-day convention includes over 850 participatory workshops, panels, seminars for job-alike groups . . . research reports, discussions, exhibits, and tours . . . keynote addresses by world-acclaimed educators, artists, researchers, and scholars . . . a once-a-year opportunity to meet in a major American city and meet colleagues from all over the world.
Each year some 140 to 200 exhibitor booths displaying the latest art textbooks, high-tech software, prints, slides, curriculum materials, equipment, and programs, as well as the latest studio and art history media are made available for examination and review to art educator delegates. It is a professional development opportunity to update yourself on the vista of state-of-the-art materials to advance visual art instruction in your program.
All NAEA sessions and events are 100% content-oriented and substantively based. There are no NAEA non-content functions such as golf, sight-seeing, shopping tours and the like. Sessions are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day.
How To Attend
NAEA convention planning starts several years out. The annual convention is always held in the spring, usually in late March to late April. Information about the site, hotels, etc., may be found in summer and fall issues of NAEA News.
If you wish to be a presenter at the convention, proposals can be submitted
electronically via the proposal form above. Deadline for submitting is June
30th.
A preliminary convention schedule is published in a special edition of NAEA News and is usually circulated in November/December prior to the convention.”

Am going for a joint paper with a colleague from NYC I met in Portugal on the InSEA this year. Sometimes collaboration just happens, because people like to exchange ideas and work together on an international level which is more interesting than on the national level I think.
Reminds me to the Wikipedia-initiative, people are highly motivated, doing it for the fun of it. There is a lot of such motivation going on online at the moment. And, on the other side of my “researcher’s-reality” is the following: My current project budget is not including any travel budgets at all. No, am not joking.
On Telepolis Florian Rötzer reports on emotional mapping („Emotionale Stadtkartierung”) in the context of an art project which researches GPS and emotion mesuring and the effects on the peoples experiences. (For those who can read German, see here: http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/22/22591/1.html for the article by Florian Rötzer [16.05.2006] on heise and here for “Bio Mapping†by Christian Nold [Jan 2004 – ongoing]: http://biomapping.net/
“Bio Mapping is a research project which explores new ways that we as individuals can make use of the information we can gather about our own bodies. Instead of security technologies that are designed to control our behaviour, this project envisages new tools that allows people to selectively share and interpret their own bio data.
The Bio Mapping tool allows the wearer to record their Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which is a simple indicator of emotional arousal in conjunction with their geographical location. This can be used to plot a map that highlights point of high and low arousal. By sharing this data we can construct maps that visualise where we as a community feel stressed and excited.
How will our perceptions of our community and environment change when we become aware of our own and each others intimate body states?†more information on the source: http://biomapping.net/
Here is an invitation delivered via the rohrpost by Prof. Tom Duscher, Department of Digital Media/Intermedia at the Muthesius-Academy of Arts, Kiel:
“The intermedia dance performance ICH² faces the challenge of the digital theatre and combines dance theatre with immersive and interactive 360 degree motiondesign.
The Premiere of ICH² will be held on June 08 at 7:30 p.m., Mediadome in Kiel, Germany.
Further performance dates: June 10, 11, 18 and 24, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
For more information and ticket reservation please call +49 (0)431-210-1741 (Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.) or visit the performance-website: www.ich-quadrat.de (English version soon to come).
Project Description
ICH² (Me to the power of 2) is a ReACT collaboration of the Muthesius college of art in Kiel (www.muthesius.de), especially the Digital Media/Intermedia department of Prof. Tom Duscher, the ballet from the city of Kiel with the director and head of choreography Mario Schröder as well as Eduard Thomas, director of the Mediadome of the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel (www.mediendom.de).
ICH² is a unique installation for an extra-ordinary space: a planetarium including a 360 degrees moving image projection. State-of-the-art projection technology is merging with dance theatre and interactive media into a fascinating wholesome piece of art, is modifying it and allowing a completely new kind of production: dancer and media together create an artistic environment that involves the audience in a new way. The impact of the imagery and the intensively short proximity of the performers, forms a high level of immersion. Hardly has a visitor been closer to the dancers. This turns standard planetariums into experimental Digital Theatres, in which man and technology are part of a unique experience of symbiosis.
The main area of research for project ReACT was the advancement of real-time tracking-technology in regard of the spacial and technical characteristics of planetariums. While usually linear image sets were shown, the use of reactive software allowed interactivity and manipulation of the projected content.
Concept: With the help of installed cameras and sensors attached to the performer’s body, movements in the space can be tracked and transmitted to a computer system based on vvvv, a toolkit for real time video synthesis.
A specially programmed software interprets the dancer’s movements in real-time, which in turn is then projected onto the dome as interactive projection and stage backdrop. This allows to create a digital double of the dancer: Motion Tracking as duplication process.
This sensory tracking system is used as well for the audio part of the production. The acoustic input is used as impulse for the digital image generation so that the visuals are synchronized in real-time. In this way a reactive visual and audio world is created, that synergetically re-interprets the image and audio composition.
