UNESCO Digi Arts on call

Currently UNESCO Digi Arts is on call. Please find below the information concerning the Young Digital Creators as well as the UNESCO Digital Arts Awards 2007:

â€œDear Friends,
The UNESCO DigiArts Team invites teachers and educators to participate in building their own creative teaching practises based on the Young Digital Creators (YDC) online learning platforms on the theme of Water and HIV/AIDS.
Timeline :
- Deadline for registration 6 December 2006
- Session running from 8 December 2006 â€“ 16 February 2007
- Selection of best practises 28 February 2007

The UNESCO DigiArts team in collaboration with the organizers of the Sharjah Biennial 8 (4 April – 4 June 2007, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates) will invite a number of the teacher participants of this session to participate in a face-to-face workshop with a professional media artist.

“Dear friends,

The UNESCO Digital Art Award 2007 is organized in association with the Sharjah Biennial 8 (4 April – 4 June 2007, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates) on the theme of “STILL LIFE – Art, Ecology and the Politics of Change”.

Theme:
Young artists are invited to reflect on how urban spaces and city environments could be transformed into creative outlets cultivating artistic innovation and new form of expression. Potential applicants to the award are asked to conceive and design their creative projects that are integral to the theme of sustainable urban development.

Prize money:
The total award money is US $10.000, which could be divided and delivered to more than one laureate.

General Guidelines:
- Submitted projects should relate to the theme and topics of the award
- The applicants must submit one project through the above-mentioned online YDC application – http://unesco.sjsu.edu/
- The user name and password of the online application would be distributed to the candidates once they have sent their CVs and completed entry forms to the UNESCO DigiArts Team digiarts@unesco.org
- Collaborative participation from more than one artist is highly welcomed
- Young, talented people from under-represented countries are especially encouraged to participate.

FREE GOPHERS v1.0 for mobiles

FREE GOPHERS v1.0 is a new game for mobiles.

“Dear All,

We have begun a public roll-out of our new experimental game ‘Gophers’.
We’re running this trial on an ongoing basis, so it does not matter when
players start (or stop) playing the game.

Our game investigates:
“Social Gaming” and
“Location Based Play” using
“User Generated Content”.

At this stage, we’re just looking to get as many people playing as
possible, so we would be grateful if you would pass this note on to anyone who you
think might be interested.

The game can be played by anyone *over 18* with a Nokia camera phone,
running the Series 60 2nd Edition platform. Players must be at least 18
because the game features user-generated content that has the potential to be
inappropriate for anyone younger. Along with the standard disclaimers,
players should also be aware that the game collects location data regarding
their movements, and that data transmission will be charged at their service providers
usual rate.

In order to play the game, players need to install some software on
their phone. This can be done by pointing their phones web browser at…

experimental ground of game design and online communities in education

Graham Attwell and I will run a seminar entitled the experimental ground of game design and online communities in education which is part of the experimental ground series at the University of Flensburg. The idea of the series was to bring in other disciplines to arts education in order to improve art teacher training. I very much enjoy preparing for it. We have a lot of discussion about the selection of tools, environments, readings etc..
We will develop, discuss and explore online communities such as MySpace as well as 3D-communities such as Second Life, to analyze and develop personal learning environments of the future with art education students. Though Second Life basically looks like capitalism extended to virtual space it seems to be a useful example to explore and discuss the opportunities, constraints and aesthetic experiences opening up joining such 3D-community.
I am very curious because the discussion about second life which is big issue on all lists at the moment. I am particularly interested in the perception of Second Life in the arts, addressed on quite a few media art lists. Recently there was a call for applications for Ars Virtua Artist-in-Residence (AVAIR), an extended performance that examines what it means to reside in a place that has no physical location. As announced on rhizome, there is also a series of the “most beautiful avatars” published here . The reflection of virtual beauty as well as interactive 3D-beauties leads us not only to identity formation and representation issues but also to new job profiles..
Furthermore, there are works by James Deavin as Regine just reported on WMMNA.
However, we will link to the issues of Communities of Practice, personal learning environments as well future learning scenarios. can such communities be called communities e.g. in the sense of a Community of Practice, what are the characteristics and drivers of a community and last not least how is the Community of Practice characterized? Does learning take place in such communities and what are the potentials for future learning environments?
I am very much looking forward to the seminar. Will report on our Second Life experiences (like flying around with newcomers and things like that) here later.

The lecture series entitled “image worlds – science worlds. art and science in dialogue” will start with Christa Sommerer, professor for Interface Culture at the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz.

â€œOn November 17th, 7 p.m., the Edith Russ Site for Media Art launches a new lecture series titled “Image worlds – Science worlds. Art and science in dialogueâ€œ with a talk by media artist and professor for interface culture, Christa Sommerer.
The series will be continued next year with renowned representatives from the fields of science and art. The next date will be February 9th, when Peter Weibel, head of the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe will reason on â€œscience and / as artâ€.

Moderated by Helene von Oldenburg

Christa Sommerer’s works which are produced in collaboration with Laurent Mignonneau are placed at the threshold of art, science and technology. In her presentation Sommerer will discuss the question how real and virtual systems can be linked together. The term interface is nowadays omnipresent. It describes the feasibility to communicate with digital technologies and to generate, receive and exchange data. In her computer installations and interactive environments Sommerer concentrates on the development of these interfaces that creatively extend the human-machine interaction by digital hardware and software design and explore applications for media art and social space.â€

Nomadic MILK – a new project by Esther Polak

Esther Polak suggested to blog about her new projects which I’ll do now.
The first one is sort of the milk-follow up project, Nomadic MILK is a new locative media project by Esther Polak and team. (Milk was a “Latvian-Dutch-GPS-mapping-art-landscape-documentary-portrait-project” she realized with Ieva Auzina and Rixc, Riga center for new media culture, and was awarded the Golden Nica 2005 at Ars Electronica Linz).

In Nomadic Milk a colour sand drawing will be realized on the ground, which visualizes the pathways of dairy transports that take place through Nigeria.

Based on actual GPS (Global Positioning System) data, the sand drawing will planed in close collaboration of the project team and dairy transporters in Nigeria:

“Being both Fulani cattle owners and people involved in the distribution of condensed milk and powder milk. Beside the sand drawing (that will be executed in differed places all over the world) the project will result in a poetic film that will tell the story of the landscape, people, economy and mobility behind the sand drawing.”
The also will be poetic documentary about the whole process of collecting GPS-data, robot drawing and discussions. I will post more about the robot drawing soon.

I will interview Esther about her intentions to work in Nigeria and how she developed the concept.

I liked the Milk project because it brought together storytelling through interviews, landscape, mapping with locative media and the visualization of GPS-data in a broader context of global economy represented by the pathways of transport of the milk.
Interestingly enough, such mapping art projects linked to locative and mobile media are not perceived in contemporary German art education, though mapping and cartography is very en vogue as a didactic concept in art education.

Her second project is her new vodcasts project which will be introduced soon.

Over 24-26 November the Forum of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Muthesius-Academy of Arts is holding the Interdisciplinary week (organised by Prof. Dr. Petra Maria Meyer) entitled “Gegenbilder- Zu abweichenden Strategien der Kriesdarstellung.” Amongst others, Katharina Sieverding and Hubertus von Amelunxen will give lecture on Sunday 26.
