Residency project – Jordan McKenzie – call for participants

Those of you subscribed to the drawing research list might have seen the following call for participants:

“The Centre for Recent Drawing’s first Online Residency has just come to the end of its run. During his internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, Italy, for the period of the Venice Biennale 2007, Victor Timofeev woke at five oâ€™clock in the morning to draw for three
hours, responding to the architectural setting of his surroundings using drawing. Timofeev combines the possibility of diary recording, an intensity of looking and an intersection by way of architectural interventions with previous visual experience and a formal compositional response. The drawings recall Ruskin, Suprematist drawing, the Italian Superstudio, and architectural illustration and modelling. New Residency Project – Jordan McKenzie – call for participants

To mark the Campaign for Drawingâ€™s Big Draw 2007 season, C4RD will be launching Jordan McKenzie’s From One to Another, on the 30th September. C4RD is calling for participants who would like to take part in initiating the process.

McKenzie’s project requires participants (often strangers to each other) to journey towards one another, where the traveller recalls the journey by tracing lines on the back of the other, who then makes a drawing in response to the sensation. Having made the drawing, it is then sent to C4RD with details of the journey. The second participant then proceeds to journey to another, repeating the process. . These drawings and the progress of the project will be available to view on C4RD’s website as an online residency.

Untitled: From One To Another examines the notation of travel, using the passing through, the journey, as a starting point for intimate encounters and exchange. It encompasses drawing, mapping and performance to embark on a journey, a journey made by many and recalled through intimate encounters. If you want to participate in the project just simply undertake the following stepsâ€¦

Begin a journey to visit a loved one, a friend or even maybe a stranger. During your journey you may use a car, public transport or possibly simply walk (which ever seems most appropriate). During your travel write an account of your journey. This account may be a simple logging of your movement, the geographical spaces you passed through, how many miles you travelled, or it may be something more complex; a description of people you met, the thoughts and daydreams you had, smellsâ€¦ How you notate your journey is up to each individual to decide, but it has to be written down.

Upon reaching your destination, gently notate the written account of your journey onto the back of the loved one, friend or stranger you have arranged to meet or chosen to ask, recounting your journey through touch. It may be a list of words, images, an abstract sensation. The friend, loved one, or stranger will then make a drawing of this journey purely by using the sensation of touch on their backs, feeling the journey and interpreting it through drawn marks. Be imaginative in the ways that you trace your journey onto the back, do not simply write out the text across the back. The person whose back is being drawn upon may make their drawing on paper, composed of mud on the floor, carved onto a piece of wood, how they draw the journey is up to each individual to decide. The drawing should be made at the same time as the notation of the journey. The only stipulation is that the one doing the drawing leaves a recordable visual trace.

After completing this, the second participant embarks on another journey to meet another loved one, friend or stranger and notates their journey onto their backs. This new participant will then make a drawing from the encounter and then embark on a journey to meet another participant. We are all responsible for continuing this process as a chain letter recording our journeys-encounters-drawings, spreading them all over the country/world. The written accounts of the journeys along with the drawings should be photographed and sent along with the names of the participants to the C4RD website.

“Together, transmediale and club transmediale invite the submission of
works and projects for the festival 2008. Submissions for both festivals
participate in the transmediale Award 2008, for which an international
jury will award prizes totalling ca. 10 000 EUR. Abstracts and papers
for a proposed VilÃ©m Flusser Theory Award are also being invited.

As one of the leading international festivals for art and digital
culture, transmediale presents and pursues the advancement of artistic
positions reflecting on the socio-cultural, political and economic
impact of new technologies. It seeks out artistic practices that not
only respond to scientific or technical developments, but that try to
shape the way in which we think about and experience the technologies
which impact virtually all aspects of our daily lives. As such,
transmediale understands media technologies as cultural techniques that
need to be embraced in order to comprehend, critique, and shape global

club transmediale (CTM) is a prominent international festival dedicated
to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well as
the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and
club culture. CTM presents projects that experiment with new aesthetic
parameters and new forms of cooperation, develop possibilities for
informational and economic self-determination, and reflect on the role
of contemporary music against the backdrop of technological and social
transformations. Now more than ever, music emerges as a laboratory for
multiform experiments and as an active agent that allows for new
cultural techniques to be tested and proffered to the wider world. CTM
puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal
interaction, and thereby emphasises the situational potential of live
performance, the interplay of various media â€“ sound and image, in
particular â€“ and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic

ISEA2008 call

ISEA2008 is seeking both peer-reviewed individual papers and panel presentations. This year we are also encouraging artists who wish to share their works with a broader audience of their peers to submit artist presentations where they can speak about the specific aesthetic, conceptual and technological aspects of their works.

We welcome contributions from creative practitioners and researchers from a variety of disciplines and institutional contexts as media arts benefits from and exemplifies the interdisciplinary linkages between contemporary art, science, technology and their related philosophies, pedagogies and institutional practices. The submissions must address or be of relevance to at least one of the themes of ISEA2008 in order to be considered for inclusion in the conference. The conference will be of interest to those working in but not limited to the following areas: media art, contemporary art, design, art history and theory, film and media studies, gaming, toy design, human-computer interaction, cultural studies, literary studies, musicology, sound studies, theatre, dance and performance studies, science, technology and society studies, history of science and history of technology, philosophy, history, gender studies, political science, anthropology, sociology and geography.

I always liked the works by the French artist Sophie Calle. Not a surprise the work presented at the Biennale stroke me most. The piece presented in the French Pavilion is entitled â€œTake care of yourselfâ€ / Prenez soin de vous. The responses are exhibited in the French Pavillion.

â€œ I received an email telling me it was over. I didnâ€™t know how
to answer. It was as if it wasnâ€™t meant for me.
It ended with the words: Take care of yourself.
I took this recommendation literally.
I asked a hundred and two women, chosen for their profession,
to interpret the letter in their professional capacity.
To analyze it, provide a commentary on it, act it, dance it, sing it.
Dissect it. Squeeze it dry. Understand for me. Answer for me.
It was a way to take the time to break up. At my own pace.
A way to take care of myself.â€

Not only because I did not reply to an email ending with â€œTake care of yourselfâ€ either. I think it is the very clear sort of didactic concept which mediates itself with no need for explanations – in contrast to other pieces. The work is strongly text-based, but the intermediality seems to be the main driver for most spectators to curiously follow the variety of documents such as photos, videos as well as the letters of response exhibited.

The other piece presented by her in the Italian pavilion in the Giardini venue is not less touching â€“ addressing her motherâ€™s death which was prognosed when she was invited to exhibit on the Biennale, presenting in response to her last sentence â€œNe vous faites pas de souciâ€.

“Sophie Calle began her artistic project upon returning to Paris in 1979 after a seven-year absence. Feeling lost in her own city she began following people, creating voyeuristic situations in which she trailed her random subjects and then reported on what she found in the photographs, notations, and fictionalized accounts of their lives. One of her most notorious works is The Address Book. In 1983, she found a manâ€™s telephone book, called the people listed in it to discuss the owner, and then reported the observations in a French newspaper, much to the manâ€™s outrage. For the series The Hotel (1983), Calle posed as a chambermaid in a Venice pensione to investigate the lives of strangers through their possessions and habits. In the guestsâ€™ absence, she photographed opened luggage, laundry, contents of bathrooms, and even trashcans, noting details gleaned from diaries, letters, and so on. Each of the twelve works in the series (one for each room Calle was assigned to clean) consists of a grid of photographs shown alongside a larger image of the hotel roomâ€™s bed, which is above a text written by the artist. Freely combining fact and conjecture, the texts include quotes and details from the documents Calle read as well as her own interpretations of the people whose privacy she playfullyâ€”and almost criminallyâ€”invaded.”
